Synopsis: Today can be called the “golden age” of science in movies and television. Scientific themes dominate top-grossing movies, and science appears prominently in many top-rated TV shows. And why not? Science and technology touch nearly every part of modern life, and the pace of discovery and invention is mind boggling. From real-life invisibility cloaks to genetically engineered germs to bionic body parts, scientists and engineers are developing, exploring, or creating a rich reality that once could only be imagined. Verisimilitude can make or break a show. Writers, actors, set designers, producers, and others are eager to enlist the help of the “scientist verite” to create the fictional but feasible framework necessary for good drama. In this workshop, film scholars, science consultants, and members of the entertainment industry will discuss the role of science and technology in movies and television and what it takes to be a consultant in Hollywood.
